International Mahjong Day Tournament
Celebrate International Mahjong Day with Mahjong in the Sun at our first-ever tournament!
Join fellow mahjong players for an afternoon of friendly competition, great food, drinks, prizes and plenty of mahj. Players will compete across two rounds of tournament play, rotating tables and opponents throughout the afternoon. Scores will be tallied across the two rounds, with prizes awarded to our first-, second- and third-place finishers!
Your $75 ticket includes tournament entry, charcuterie from Let’s Cheese Jax, one drink ticket from Really Good Beer Stop, one raffle ticket, access to tournament prizes, shopping from our onsite vendors, and a special Mahjong in the Sun merchandise offer available during the event.
Additional raffle tickets and Mahjong in the Sun merchandise will be available for purchase onsite.
Please note: This tournament is designed for experienced players. There will be no formal instruction during the event. Players should be comfortable reading the current NMJL card, building hands independently and completing gameplay without instructional assistance.

Laura Gainor
Founder of Pickleball in the Sun and Mahjong in the Sun, Laura Gainor brings a unique experiential approach to teaching mahjong. With a deep passion for both pickleball and mahjong, she has built her brands around connection, community, and the lifestyle that comes with them — from courts to tables. Laura loves introducing new players to the game in a fun, social way, making Mahjong 101 approachable, engaging, and memorable for everyone.
Kennedy Blair
Kennedy Blair is a true people person and natural community builder. By day, she serves as a People & Operations Specialist at Pro Shop, and locally she’s been a familiar face at The Pickle Garden Pro Shop at The Yards. Her energy and enthusiasm shine through in every Mahjong 101 lesson she leads, creating a welcoming and fun environment for beginners. We’re excited to have Kennedy as part of the Mahjong in the Sun team for this special Mahj & Mingle experience at The Yards.
Alice Frazier
Alice Frazier was one of the original members of the Mahjong in the Sun community and quickly fell in love with the game, now playing multiple times a week alongside founder Laura Gainor. A mom of two daughters, Alice has become known for her warm, welcoming, and encouraging Mahjong 101 teaching style, receiving rave reviews at events like Mahjong in the Sun’s Mahj & Mingle benefiting Once Upon a Room Jacksonville, where the team helped teach more than 24 players mahjong for the very first time.
Jessica Carbone
Jessica Carbone was one of the original members of the Mahjong in the Sun community, and she and her family quickly became passionate about the game and the community surrounding it. Jessica now serves as a co-host of Mahjong in the Sun’s weekly Friday Club events at Really Good Beer Stop in Nocatee, where players gather each week for open play mahjong. Alongside her son, Louis Carbone — Mahjong in the Sun’s Junior Ambassador — the two help set up and support the growing community each Friday. Jessica is also the co-founder of Carbone Fit, and Laura is thankful to share the “Pickleball in the Morning, Mahjong in the Afternoon” lifestyle with her.

The Picklr Heritage Cup: A Wood Paddle Tournament
Happening Nationwide at The Picklr Locations! The Picklr Heritage Cup is a throwback event hosted on National Pickleball Day, August 8, to celebrate the sport’s origins and the 60th anniversary of pickleball.
Tournament Details:
All participants will compete in this unique event using wood paddles to recreate a classic pickleball experience for players of all skill levels. This is your chance to rally like it’s 1965, so come dressed in your best 60’s retro attire.
Cost:
FREE to all members and non-members
Tournament Format & Details:
Format: Traditional partner pool play leading into a single-elimination bracket.
Skill Divisions: Throwing it back – beginner, intermediate, and advanced
Age Requirement: 8+ (grouped by skill level).
Pool Play:
Each team plays every team in their pool once.
Round Robin Option for Seeding: If there are six or fewer teams in a division, all teams will compete in a single pool.
Sign-ups will be capped based on your club’s court capacity per division.
Depending on the number of pools and teams in each division, the top team(s) from each pool will advance to a single-elimination bracket.
Scoring:
Games are played to 11 points.
Win by 2, capped at 13 (except in medal matches, which have no cap).

Join us at the 10th Annual Hops that Help event benefiting the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation.
